One of the things we’ve been looking at constantly throughout development is how the handling of trails would work. We wanted to allow users to submit their trail tracks (that was and will always will be central to the site design) while at the same time acting as a great resource for people to find trails and trail maps.
We were worried that if we allowed users to submit trail maps directly to the database it wouldn’t be 100% clean. We could have trails starting not at the beginning but from someone’s cottage down the road or incomplete trail maps.
What we’ve decided to do is break our trail section in to two pieces -
1) Trails, these will be official trail maps. We will work with clubs and also have our team out mapping trails. This will ensure you can count on 100% accuracy on our maps
2) Tracks, tracks will be the track logs submitted by users.
Users will be able to search and look at both Tracks and Trails. Trails will have updated trail conditions and ratings. Tracks will have the details submitted by users.
We hope this change will help make the site more useful for all of our users. Please let us know if you have any feedback!

Part of our final pre-launch milestone (Milestone 1.5) was to clean up the bugs with the site. This evening we cleaned up the last of those bugs and we are getting very close to being able to launch the site.
The last feature we are adding before going in to public beta is a new way of uploading trails which is very exciting! We are changing the trail adding system to be able to handle uploads from ANY GPS device to the site. This was functionality we envisioned for well down the road but we found a way to get it in in time for launch.

Well after two months of work ATVTrailFind is ready for launch (at least the back end software). We have completed all the development steps for Milestone 1. MS1 was the initial building of the site allowing users to submit, and view trails.
Next up for us is to complete Milestone 1.5 which basically is making sure there are no bugs in the functionality we have now and then begin adding trails. We are aiming to start promoting the site around the net and within the ATV community around March 15th (our tentative completion date for MS1.5 is).
Bring on the site!

We’ve taken advantage of google’s new terrain map feature and made it the default when viewing trails. I figured I’d try this out and see if this view is more meaningful then the usual political/default map view.
Feel free to post comments on the changes and let me know if you prefer one of the other map views!

In anticipation of the official launch of ATVTrailfind.com in a few weeks we went ahead and upgraded our web host to a dedicated machine this weekend hosted by mediatemple. Mediatemple is one of the world’s most renowned webhosts (hosting the ever popular ElfYourself, Starbuck’s hearMUSIC, Sony, Adobe, and a lot more) and we are really looking forward to seeing the higher level of hosting quality that this is going to bring.
Also the move over the weekend helped us identify an issue with the login system… So already we are experiencing the benefits

Another big Milestone 1 item was completed today. You can now search for trails!
We have 15 days to go until our first major milestone target date and this was one of two remaining major to-dos! Next up is the trail addition interface and we are good to go for getting ready for launch.

Milestone 1 is our first major milestone here at atvtrailfind and we are super excited to be getting close. What all is involved with MS1? It is the basic guts of the site: being able to register as a user, submit trails, view trails, find trails, etc.
Our current deadline for MS1 is the end of February with an official launching of the site shortly thereafter.
We’ll be updating this blog for no on with details on what to expect from the dev team and details on the cool stuff we are working towards!
